Figure 8s plays with the notions of time and chaos, and our limited perceptions of these concepts as human beings. Drawing from my personal experience as a figure skater - I was a competitive ice dancer for six years and a touring professional for three years - I reshape an exercise we used to practice called Figure 8s, where the skater would do crossovers in one direction for a full circle then cross the ice and do them in the other. In this work, I subvert the exercise on its head. Three actual figure skating trophies (admittedly earned between both my sister and me) are catapulted into a chaotic cosmos, navigating shards of glass from broken alcohol bottles, with nothing but the remnants of numeric markers to lead them. This work attempts to untangle the concept of time and how our modern worlds have structured them, pressuring individuals to fill them up with business at every waking moment, running around in circles, first in one direction, then another, feeling all that movement is leading them somewhere. I particularly wanted to integrate shards of glass flying through space to allude to a greater chaos experienced by women and people of color. We have often had to bear the brunt of humanity’s chaotic societal perceptions and convoluted class systems.
