Kassy Kova created this piece as a birthday gift for her mama. The artist wanted to encapsulate the energy of motherly love, honoring the tremendous amount of effort caring mothers put into birthing us, raising us, and shaping us into the people we'll become. This nurturing energy exists in all species, in the fruitful energy of nature itself.
The wooden door was sourced from a street near her studio, the rocks from an adjacent park, the leaves and branches from someone's discarded bouquet, the glass from water bottles, the mirror shards from beside some trash bins, and the jewels from her mother's necklace from Côte d'Ivoire. (Resin, paint, ink, and sparkles are from various art shops).
The title references the religious practice of depicting Madonna and Child (Byzantine, Renaissance, etc.), but here the artist removes the aspect of religion and subverts it with her own spiritual beliefs and cultural heritage.
This tote is not only art you can carry—it is a socially responsible choice. Crafted from 100% recycled open-end, pre-washed cotton, and approved by FAIRWEAR.org, it honors both earth and humanity. Every stitch supports ethical labor, reduced environmental impact, and a more intentional way of living.
